Steven Matijcio will be the next director and chief curator of the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston. He will begin in his post on March 11.

Matijcio “brings with him an impressive record of producing timely, thoughtfully developed and politically potent exhibitions, many of them with a social engagement aspect,” University of Houston College of the Arts dean Andrew Davis said in a statement.

Matijcio is currently the head of the curatorial department at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati, where he has been a curator since 2013. During his tenure there, he has curated solo shows of Firelei Báez (in 2018), Kahlil Joseph (2018), Glenn Kaino (2017), Andrea Bowers (2017), Do Ho Suh (2016), and Titus Kaphar (2015), among others.

He also served on the curatorial team for the exhibition “After the Moment: Reflections on Robert Mapplethorpe,” which opened in November 2015 to mark the 25th anniversary of a CAC Mapplethorpe retrospective. Because the exhibition included examples from the photographer’s controversial “X Portfolio,” the CAC’s director at the time, Dennis Barrie, faced trial on obscenity charges. (He was acquitted.)

“Art and artists are found in so many places, inside and outside of the expected locations,” Matijcio said in a statement. “I like to say that I live my location through a curatorial lens, which means diving deep into the character of a place through exploration, research, interviews and experiencing art and performance across all disciplines.”
