The Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts Department of Sculpture + Extended Media’s highly competitive two-year MFA program has been the top ranked sculpture program since 2003 by U.S. News & World Report. The program attracts talented and inquisitive students from around the world, who are drawn to our exceptional resources, celebrated faculty, and the international visibility of the department’s alumni.

Students are equipped with large studio spaces, state-of-the-art facilities and the time to pursue independently determined goals. They receive full tuition support, paid assistantships, research travel grants, and residency program and major exhibition opportunities. With 24-hour access to a media lab, fabrication shops and a foundry, students can indulge in the widest possible range of making. All of this takes place in a supportive environment where experimentation, self-motivation and intellectual rigor are expected.

The program offers close mentorship by sculpture faculty, including Corin Hewitt, Michael Jones McKean, Kendall Buster, Massa Lemu, Lily Cox-Richard, Matt King, and Lupe Maravilla. Recent visiting faculty include A.L Steiner, Sable Elyse Smith, Lee Relvas, Clifford Owens, and Gordon Hall. An active program of visiting artists, curators and writers is designed to address the evolving cultural conversations of our time. Application deadline is January 15, 2018.
