In a major shakeup in the accelerating Los Angeles art market, veteran dealer Sarah Watson has left Sprüth Magers, where she has been senior director since 2015, to become president of Kayne Griffin Corcoran gallery.

Two new artists are joining KGC along with Watson—Llyn Foulkes, who’s previously done shows with Sprüth Magers, and Hank Willis Thomas. The roster for the gallery, which Bill Griffin, James Corcoran, and Maggie Kayne started in 2011, also includes Mary Corse, Charles Harlan, Mary Obering, and Beverly Pepper, among others.

“I saw that the gallery has come so far in such a short period of time,” Watson said in a phone interview from San Francisco, when asked about the move. “I have been friends with Maggie, Bill, and James for years, and I thought it would be an interesting time to join the program.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Sarah to Kayne Griffin Corcoran and know the gallery will tremendously benefit from her over two decades of experience working with artists and important collections worldwide,” Griffin said in a statement to press.

Before joining Sprüth Magers, which also has spaces in Berlin and London, Watson started the L.A. branch of L&M Arts (now Mnuchin Gallery). Prior to that, she was with the powerhouse Gagosian gallery in the city.

The news of Watson’s hire comes just weeks before a bevy of fairs—Art Los Angeles Contemporary and the inaugural editions of Frieze Los Angeles and Felix LA—alight in the area, with the aim of stoking its art scene.
